Feat. Liz Sloan, Rev. Aaron Morris & Brody Wellman

Coyote and the Sweet Moon is my version of the Indigenous peoples story of the trickster Coyote and why he cry's to the Moon. Recorded of several months time when Liz, Rev., & Brody were in town with their respective bands. Each artist did an amazing job of nailing parts outside of their typical style of play. I can never praise or thank them enough for their contributions. This song certainly wouldn't be the same without them.

Lyrics

The Sun paints the desert
with fire. The mountains’
red embers aglow. As it
spills out its last rays of
light in the smoldering
valley below. Where
there’s hardly a sign of
life, but the snakes and
the cactus, alone. In the
shade he will patiently
wait--this one little
lonely coyote.

“Sweet Moon, won’t you
shine your light for
me, my love?”

As the Sun hides behind
the tree line, a shadow is
stretched across the valley.
Coyote emerges believing it
to be nightfall, but it’s just a
trick of light. The Sun has
refused to leave the sky until
he sees Sweet Moon. “Coyote,
I know you have taken her.
Now you will feel my heat
everyday until she returns.”
Coyote replies, “Yes, I have
taken her. And her beauty
is mine, and mine alone.
But I would gladly trade her
for the stars. For there are
many more of them.” When
the Coyote releases Sweet
Moon, he tells him, “I will
never give you the stars
for you are far too greedy.
You will call out to her
every night, but Sweet
Moon will never leave
the sky again.”

“Sweet Moon, won’t you
shine your light for
me, my love?
Your light for
me, my love?”

He climbed the highest
rock, convinced the
Sweet Moon to come close.
That’s when he opened his
mouth and swallowed up
Sweet Moon whole.
They’ll dance across the
night, possessed by her
pale white glow. That’s
when he opened his eyes
and it’s dawn, and she’s
gone, and he’s alone.
